The TKMS 6th grade beginning band camp will begin on August16th and 17th. This is a great way for students to get started on their instrument in smaller, like-instrument groups. Please see the schedule below for specific days and times. The cost of the camp is $20.00, payable by cash or check made out to Thornapple Kellogg Schools. There is no need to preregister, just show up the first scheduled day. This is an optional activity. Students who are unable to attend usually catch up quickly during the school year with the help of those students who were able to attend. Those students renting or buying an instrument from Meyer Music (1-800-792-0123) should receive their instrument the first day of band camp.

After our performance one of those directors will conduct a ½ hour clinic with our band. Here is the schedule:

Dear Parents and Students,

This letter is regarding the TKMS Band performance of the National Anthem at the Grand Rapids Griffins game on Saturday, January 16th. We have over 75 students performing that evening as well as 175 family members going in support of the band! We should have a successful and fun time at the hockey game that evening. Here is an approximate time line of that evening’s events:

5:00 PM – Students report to the TKMS Band Room to get instrument (in case) and music. Mr. Hagemann will be in the TKMS lobby to distribute tickets. Each student will receive an envelope labeled with their name containing their own individual ticket as well as any additional tickets ordered. Tickets will be distributed so that students and family members are seated together.

** If for some reason you need the tickets ahead of time just let me know and I will send them home with your child. Otherwise, tickets will be distributed that evening at school.

5:15 PM – Students and family members electing to ride the bus depart TKMS.
6:15 PM – Busses arrive at Van Andel Arena. All student performers will enter the arena at the Southeast entrance.
6:30 PM – Band gets organized and warms up.
7:00 PM – Performance of the National Anthem on the ice at Van Andel Arena!
7:15 PM – Band members join their family at their seats.
9:30 PM – (approximate) Game ends, students retrieve instruments from storage area, busses are loaded and depart. Students may ride home with a parent, however, please inform me ahead of time of your plans! (See below) It is important that I have each student accounted for on the trip home to TKMS.
10:15 PM – (approximate) Busses arrive at TKMS.

ATTIRE: Students should wear the TKMS Band T-Shirt and a nice pair of blue jeans (please, no stylish holes in the knees, etc.). The T-Shirt MUST BE TUCKED IN DURING OUR PERFORMANCE!!
HOCKEY ETIQUETTE: Ushers will hold fans at the stairwells until the puck is out of play. Also, students should not get out of their seats while the puck is in play. Students are free to use the restroom and go to concession stands when they wish, but must come back to their seats promptly.

On Friday, October 2^nd, the TKMS 7^th and 8^th Grade Bands will combine to perform in the TK High School Homecoming Parade. Students must report to the middle school band room by 4:30 that afternoon. Students must wear athletic shoes, blue jeans, and their choice of the TKMS Band T-Shirt or some other TK shirt (sports jersey, sweatshirt, etc.). The parade begins at Lee Elementary at 5:15 and ends at the Football Stadium.

As part of the festivities students will receive a pass good for free admission to the game that evening. Also, the high school athletic booster will be offering free food and activities in the parking lot prior to the game. At the conclusion of the parade students will walk back to the Middle School to put away instruments and equipment. The parade should be concluded by 5:45 PM. They will then be released to either take part in the activities and game on their own, or to go home.

Due to the early report time for this event, I will be providing an after-school activity for those students who must stay at school in order to be on time for the 4:30 report time. We will be watching a movie and having snacks in the band room. However, I do need an accurate count of how many students will be staying so that I may purchase the snacks. With that in mind, please fill out and return the below information so that I can plan for the appropriate number of students.
